Gelezen in februari

Naar goede maandelijkse gewoonte vind je hier weer een uitgebreid overzicht van alle boeken die ik in februari las. Het was absoluut een minder goede leesmaand dan januari, maar alsnog wel een zeer goede leesmaand, haha. Ik las 9 (eigenlijk 8) boeken uit.

Vanaf nu gebruik ik ook een peperschaal om aan te geven hoeveel ‘spice’ er in een boek zit, oftewel: hoe expliciet de romantische en seksuele content is. Kwestie dat je wat weet waar je je aan kan verwachten (volgens mijn mening). 😉

Uitleg spice:

❌ Level 0 — Absoluut geen spice. Geen kusje. Geen knuffel. Niets.
🫑 Level 1 — Alleen zoentjes, geen seks. Of seks achter gesloten deuren.
🌶️ Level 2 — De deur gaat op een kier: lichte scènes, snel afgekapt of vaag beschreven.
🌶️🌶️ Level 3 — Wat explicieter, maar seks is niet de focus van het boek.
🌶️🌶️🌶️ Level 4 — Regelmatig en best gedetailleerd. Het wordt hier wat warmer.
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Level 5 — Zeer expliciet en een groot deel van het verhaal, maar er is nog verhaal.

Ik las dit boek eigenlijk nog in januari uit, maar tegen dat ik het klaar had, was mijn post met gelezen boeken al gepubliceerd.

Wauw. Ik ben niet goed in het schrijven van recensies of boekbesprekingen en ik heb heel sterk het gevoel dat alles wat ik kan zeggen dit boek geen eer aan doet. Ik werd erin gezogen en het liet mij niet meer los. De beschrijvingen zijn prachtig en levendig en beklijvend en sprookjesachtig. Er gebeurt veel en tegelijk ook totaal niet, omdat we veel van de innerlijke wereld van Andrew meekrijgen, maar dat stoorde mij niet, omdat het zo mooi beschreven is allemaal. Ik ben misschien wat naïef, maar de plottwist zag ik totaal niet aankomen en die brak mijn hart wel een beetje. Het einde is vrij open, wat ik vaak frustrerend vind, maar hier ook weer niet. Ik vond het echt perfect!

Nog voor ik het boek had uitgelezen, heb ik een fysiek exemplaar besteld om aan mijn verzameling toe te voegen.

Ugh, dit boek was het echt helemaal niet. Ik twijfel zelfs of ik het mag meetellen, omdat ik zoveel geskipt heb. Ik heb het gevoel dat grote stukken van dit boek door AI geschreven zijn. Ik kan fout zijn natuurlijk, maar ik weet niet of het het beter maakt als het niet door AI geschreven zou zijn… Het zou een boek zijn voor fans van ‘Deep End’ van Ali Hazelwood. Laat me zeggen dat Deep End veel beter is.

Er is echt veel mis met dit boek. Ik voel 0,0 chemie tussen Nora en Dean. Hun conversaties zijn bizar stijf, alles is net wat te toevallig, de nevenpersonages zijn een soort van all-knowing, gedachtenlezende wezens, het is inconsistent (eerst zegt Nora tegen Dean dat ze aanwezig was op zijn hockeytraining, de volgende pagina is ze verbaasd dat hij weet dat ze op zijn hockeytraining was… De ex van Dean heeft het ook twee keer uitgemaakt…), er wordt te veel herhaald en niets is concreet genoeg wanneer het erop aankomt. Dat laatste was nog een van mijn grootste ergernissen. Dean vraagt aan Nora wat ze wil in bed en het enige wat uit haar mond komt is “you”. Volgens mij heb ik dit drie keer op een pagina gelezen. Saahaaaai.

Het zou het boek veel geholpen hebben als een editor zich ermee had bemoeid om alle stommigheid eruit te halen.

The Corruption of Hollis Brown van K. Ancrum

In 1 week tijd twee vijfsterrenboeken! Wauw! Ik was eigenlijk wel nieuwsgierig hoe het precies zou werken: een liefdesverhaal als beide personages in hetzelfde lichaam zitten, maar het was zo mooi uitgewerkt! De overgang van “ik wil niet dat je in mijn lichaam zit” naar liefde tussen de twee was zo goed uitgewerkt. Ik vond het een intiem verhaal, prachtig beschreven, mooie zinnen. De auteur gebruikt korte hoofdstukken, wat ik heel fijn vond en waardoor het extra vlot las.

Ik heb het boek meteen besteld voor in mijn boekenkast en toen ik het uit had, zat ik een beetje in een put. Ik vond het moeilijk om meteen een ander boek te beginnen. Ik zou het zonder problemen meteen nog eens kunnen lezen.

Heartless Hunter van Kristen Ciccarelli (The Crimson Moth #1)

Ik had wat kleine problemen met dit boek, maar die doen maar een half sterretje af aan de score. Dit is zo’n boek waarbij ik op het puntje van mijn stoel zat. Ik wilde weten wat er in godsnaam allemaal aan het gebeuren was en nog ging gebeuren, want hallo, zo spannend! Altijd heel dubbel, want ik wil doorlezen en snel lezen en skippen om mijn nieuwsgierigheid te bevredigen en tegelijk wil ik op mijn gemak lezen om niets te missen.

Een van de problemen voor mij was dat ik het liefdesverhaal wat te snel vond gaan. Naar mijn mening gingen onze Rune en Gideon wat te snel over naar “wow, dit is voor altijd”, terwijl ze nog helemaal niet zo lang aan het courten zijn. Uiteraard valt tegen het einde alles in de soep en werd het allemaal (niet enkel hun verhaal) wat emotioneel. Maar goe! Jongens toch.

Rebel Witch van Kristen Ciccarelli (The Crimson Moth #2)

Het vervolg op Heartless Hunter. Ik geef dit boek een half sterretje minder, omdat het mijns inziens iets korter kon. Ik had op een bepaald punt een beetje het gevoel dat we in een cirkeltje draaiden en er niet echt vooruitgang kwam. Daarnaast vond ik het ook allemaal vrij voorspelbaar. Dat gezegd zijnde, vond ik ook dit toch wel een topboek! Fijn ook om eens een boek te lezen waarbij de enemies echt enemies zijn.

Icarus van K. Ancrum

Amai, wauw, kijk, nog een vijfsterrenboek van K. Ancrum dat ik graag aan mijn fysieke boekenkast zou toevoegen. Ik denk dat ik fan ben! 😉 Ik zie veel gelijkenissen met The Corruption of Hollis Brown. Dezelfde korte hoofdstukjes, dezelfde prachtig talige schrijfstijl, dezelfde soort personages, maar geen zorgen, het verhaal is totaal anders. Ik zat er meteen in en vond de laatste 100 pagina’s zelfs best wel spannend.

Wat ik fijn vind aan de twee verhalen die ik nu van deze auteur las, is dat zij haar verhalen echt heel mature personages met fijne vriendschappen geeft. En oké, het is misschien niet heel realistisch, maar dat zijn de verhalen op zich ook niet bepaald. Maar het is allemaal samen een mooi geheel en ik ben benieuwd naar haar andere boeken.

Rewind It Back van Liz Tomforde (Windy City #5)

Ik was grote fan van de boeken uit de Windy City-reeks van Liz Tomforde, maar deze vond ik de minste. Jammer om hiermee de reeks af te sluiten eigenlijk.

Ik schreef dit op Goodreads:

Hallie? Ugh.
Hun relatie? Meh.
Te veel herhaling.
En praat toch gewoon met elkaar, mensenlief.

Dat somt het wel wat op, haha. Ik vond Hallie vooral strontvervelend. Rio vond ik lief, maar ik miste zijn persoonlijkheid uit de andere boeken heel erg. Daar is hier niets van te zien. Hun relatie als tieners vond ik wel schattig, maar nu? Oh, mensen toch, echt. Al die miscommunicatie en dan het grote geheim waardoor alles in de soep is gelopen. Ik kan daar gewoon niet tegen. Als ze als twintigers met elkaar hadden gepraat, was het allemaal zo fout niet gelopen.

En al die flashbacks… Het was te veel en er gebeurde te weinig. Elke flashback was eigenlijk hetzelfde verhaal, maar dan een jaar later.

Don’t Say You’re Sorry van Bethany Winters (Hawthorne University #2)

Waardering: 3 uit 5.

Voordat ik dit boek startte, begon ik zowel in A Court of Wings and Ruin van Sarah J. Maas als The Second Death of Locke van V.L. Bovalino, die ik beide niet uitlas (A Court of Wings and Ruin ga ik nog wel eens een kans geven) en ik had nood aan een MxM-romance die ik snel kon lezen. Check! ✅

Vraag me niet waarom ik nu ineens boeken over stiefbroers lees; ik krijg dat aangeraden nadat ik er een goed vond. Het is niet zo dat het feit dat het stiefbroers zijn me per se aanspreekt. De verwachtingen waren alleszins niet zo hooggespannen, maar ik ben wel nog aangenaam verrast! De found family vond ik tof en de band tussen Adam en Easton ook. Wat ik jammer vond, is dat ze er in een terugblik naar het begin van hun relatie (toen nog “relatie”) nogal invliegen (als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel), terwijl ze allebei eigenlijk nog jong zijn en nog nooit een mannelijke partner hebben gehad, maar dat gaat precies allemaal vanzelf goed en nogal heftig ook. Geen verkennende fase of niets, gewoon tjik tjak vollenbak, terwijl ik net wel graag lees hoe ze naar elkaar groeien.

Dit was het tweede boek uit een reeks en ik ben wel nieuwsgierig gemaakt naar het eerste.

Like You Hate Me van Bethany Winters (Hawthorne University #1)

And even though he knows exactly what I’m doing to him, he’s gonna let me do it anyway.

Dit is het eerste boek uit de reeks. Not my cup of tea. Het las snel en er zaten wat goeie elementen in, maar ik vond het merendeel van het verhaal toch dat niet. Carter? What the hell. Ik vond hem zo gemeen! Nate ook, maar ik begreep hem ergens nog, gezien de hele situatie, maar is het dan nodig om elke keer met je “vijand” de koffer in te duiken? Ik dacht het niet. En als je dat dan doet, is het dan echt nodig om élke keer zo’n gemene dingen te zeggen? Nee toch? Ik had eigenlijk veel medelijden met Xavi.
