Gelezen in april – tussenmarsenjupiter

April was een wat mindere leesmaand dan maart, maar ik las acht boeken uit (en 1 niet uitgelezen) en eigenlijk kan ik daardoor ook niet zeggen dat het een mindere maand was, vind ik. Acht is nog altijd best veel.

Ik heb best lang gedaan over The Death-Made Prince, ik denk mede doordat ik Thraga irritant vond in het begin, maar eens dat boek uit was, ging het ineens snel! Ik las daarna op vakantie in Spanje 5 boeken uit.

Waar ik een tijdje terug het scoren wat serieuzer wou nemen, heb ik dat sinds vorige maand compleet losgelaten. Ik scoor nu echt op mijn gevoel en voorlopig werkt het wel fijn op deze manier.

🫑 Level 1 — Alleen zoentjes, geen seks. Of seks achter gesloten deuren.
🌶️ Level 2 — De deur gaat op een kier: lichte scènes, snel afgekapt of vaag beschreven.
🌶️🌶️ Level 3 — Wat explicieter, maar seks is niet de focus van het boek.
🌶️🌶️🌶️ Level 4 — Regelmatig en best gedetailleerd. Het wordt hier wat warmer.
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Level 5 — Zeer expliciet en een groot deel van het verhaal, maar er is nog verhaal.
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Level 6 — Erotica-niveau. Heel grafisch, niets wordt aan de verbeelding overgelaten. Het verhaal draait om de seks.

Kijk, dit was geen slecht boek, maar ik was teleurgesteld. De korte inhoud doet vermoeden dat we een groot deel te lezen gaan krijgen over Call zijn ghost problem en hoe Ryan hem kan helpen, maar dat was helemaal niet het geval. Af en toe komen de spirits eens piepen en dan zijn ze weer weg. Meer naar het einde toe krijgen ze een iets grotere rol, maar alsnog te weinig. Jammer wel!

The thing about guys is that we communicate on a physical, primal level. A hearty slap on the backside just means “good game, bro”. Some good old fashioned roughhousing just means we’re comfortable with each other. Some late night stress relief? Just dudes being dudes…

Right?

If I were gay, I wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about what his lips taste like. I’d want to spend all my time with him and miss him when he’s not around. I would find his god awful cooking skills a little charming.

But none of that is true… almost none of it.

We’re just friends. Just roommates. Just a couple of guys doing what guys do.

Of course I love him like a bro, but I’m not falling in love with my roommate, no matter how cool and funny and jacked he is.

Nope, not gonna happen…

Jacked is a low angst, double bi-awakening, idiots to lovers with a pair of meat head roommates stumbling their way through falling in love with each other without even realizing it. Lots of wholesome masculinity, an Only One Sleeping Bag moment, and ‘Bro’ as a term of endearment.

Hm ja, pfft. Ik stoorde mij in dit boek héél erg aan hoe vaak ik die personages lees denken hoe totaal niet gay ze zijn en dan heel erg gay’e dingen doen en dan uiteindelijk toch tot de conclusie komen dat ze misschien biseksueel zijn. Zucht. No shit, Sherlock.

Ik lees vooral ook veel over de band die ze hebben, maar ik voel die band niet echt. Dus ja, het was niet 100% slecht, maar ik kan het toch ook niet goed noemen.

Echt doodzonde dat het verhaal niet afgerond is met dit ene boek en dat het tweede boek nog niet uit is. Dat vind ik stom, maar oké, superboek wel dit!

Al moet ik toegeven dat ik me in het begin groen en blauw ergerde aan Thraga, maar je merkt wel een serieuze groei in haar en daardoor vond ik haar steeds toffer worden. Durlain heb ik ook toegevoegd aan mijn lijst met favo book boyfriends. Jammer genoeg staat hij wel eventjes op de zwarte lijst door zijn acties op het einde, maar ik ben vrij zeker dat hij het in boek twee goed gaat maken, haha.

Wat ik fijn vond: een echte slow burn, ze vinden elkaar in het begin ook écht niet leuk. Durlain is afstandelijk en koud, maar ook zo empowerend naar Thraga toe, wat verwarrend is, maar ook aaaaaah 😍. En! Thraga heeft OCD en hoewel ik het zelf niet heb en dus niet echt weet hoe het is, vond ik het wel goed in beeld gebracht.

Ik geef het drie pepertjes, waarvan eentje tussen haakjes, omdat de ene seksscène (of misschien twee, ik weet het niet goed meer) best wel expliciet beschreven is, maar het zijn er dus maar maximaal twee.

Korte inhoud is van boek 1, maar ik las in een paar dagen tijd alle boeken uit.

Bij het eerste boek was ik nog wat in de war met hoe het nu precies zat en ik hou niet van dat gevoel, alsof ik iets mis en de enige ben die het niet snapt. Doorheen de boeken wordt alles wel helemaal duidelijk.

Ik zou zeggen dat het geen boeken voor the faint-hearted zijn. De inhoud is nogal expliciet en niet bepaald euhm zacht of liefdevol of zo, haha. Deze personages zijn ook echt zo toxisch als maar kan zijn en mijn maag heeft zich serieus een paar keer gekeerd, maar ik kon het toch allemaal niet neerleggen en ik zat er echt in.

Heel gelukkig met hoe alles afgesloten is, al voelde het tempo van het laatste boek wat vreemd aan. We zien veel van onze jongens die alles aan het uitvogelen zijn en het einde is er dan vrij plots. Maar het is een mooie afsluiter!

Oh boy. Dit boek was … a ride. Ik heb het niet uitgelezen en kan het dus eigenlijk niet echt scoren, maar het feit dat ik het niet uitlas, zegt wel genoeg, denk ik.

Ik zag dit boek dus voorbijkomen in een post op Instagram met unhinged maar verslavende boeken, en unhinged is het zeker. Hier zit echt 0,0 verhaal in. Ik wist dat het erotica was voor ik begon en ik was wel soort van voorbereid. Waar ik niet op voorbereid was, was een groepje mannen die absoluut, zeker, honderd procent niet gay zijn, en om de haverklap seks met elkaar hebben. De “ik ben niet gay (of bi)”-interne monoloog komt wel wat anders binnen als iedereen in het boek zichzelf constant tegenspreekt. Maar het is gewoon “dude stuff,” en ze zijn “just friends.” Juuuuuuist.

Het enige waar ik misschien wat punten voor geef: de gedachten tijdens de seksscènes waren af en toe interessant. Ik zag zo een glimp van een beetje persoonlijkheid. Maar goed ja, het is erotica, dus dat is misschien niet nodig? Maar ik vind dat toch wel fijn.

Maar dan! Mensen toch. Het is overal van slime, gooey spul hier en daar, slurping en drooling overal. Ik weet niet waarom de auteur daarvoor kiest… Ik vond dat echt totaal onsexy en werd uit elke scène gehaald zodra die woorden verschenen, wat dus, gezien het boek voor ongeveer 95% uit seksscènes bestaat, betekent dat ik het grootste deel ervan heb zitten gezichten trekken. Ik daag je uit om je gezicht serieus te houden als je leest over hun bro-slime en dick-slime en gooey syrup en al.

Maar dus, als je expliciete content wil waarbij je af en toe het gevoel hebt dat je een natuurdocumentaire over slakken leest, dan moet je dit lezen. 🐌 Het was niet mijn ding, maar gezien alle lovende recensies ben ik serieus in de minderheid, dus het ligt dan misschien gewoon aan mij.

Alweer een prachtig boek van C.G. Drew en dat op het allerlaatste nippertje uitgelezen (ik bleef misschien weeral te lang op, ja)! Het was meteen ook het boek waar ik het langste over deed, omdat mijn hart er pijn van deed en ik ergens ook niet verder wilde lezen om mezelf tegen de heartbreak te beschermen. Maar het is het waard! Echt een héél mooi verhaal, intens mooi beschreven allemaal en die jongens kruipen onder je vel, niet normaal. Ik ga de andere boeken van deze auteur wat hoger op mijn TBR zetten!

Zeer aanwezige autismerepresentatie ook!
