Ofwel spendeer ik zo goed als al mijn vrije tijd aan mijn blog, ofwel aan boeken en het is te merken dat ik mijn blog wat aan het verwaarlozen ben (voor mijn doen); ik las in januari maar liefst 17 boeken uit.

Icebreaker van A.L. Graziadei

Waardering: 4.5 uit 5.

Wat een mooi, lief verhaal was dit! Goed geschreven en goed uitgediepte personages. “Fijn” hoe Mickey’s depressie en angsten op een realistische manier aan bod komen. We zien veel van de band tussen het team en Mickey en zijn zussen, wat een pluspunt is, want die zijn 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻.
Het einde vond ik eerlijk gezegd wel kak, omdat de vraag die onze hoofdpersonages zowat het hele verhaal bezighoudt niet beantwoord wordt. Ik snap dat het voor hen uiteindelijk niet meer uitmaakt wie uitgekozen wordt, MAAR VOOR MIJ WEL! Ik wil eigenlijk graag weten hoe het verdergaat en hoe ze ermee omgaan, dus in dat opzicht mocht de epiloog wel wat uitgebreider.

Het is een YA-boek, dus geen expliciete scènes! (voor de mensen die daar niet van houden)

Voor mij was er te weinig rivaliteit (eigenlijk bijna geen) en ging het allemaal net iets te snel. Het speelt zich af in een paar weken tijd en dat lijkt me niet heel realistisch, maar goed, is dat altijd noodzakelijk? Nee.

Het stoorde me ook een beetje dat de vader van Connor zo evil is en zoveel macht heeft dat hij een Olympische atleet van zijn medailleceremonie kan laten verwijderen zonder duidelijke reden. En het is allemaal ook wel heel snel opgelost.

Wat ik wel oké vond: hoe committed ze zijn en hoe hun band evolueert + de andere personages zijn mega tof!

Untouchable Player van Emmery Fox

Waardering: 2 uit 5.

In this spicy MM hockey romance, defenseman Jesse finds himself catching feelings for his friend’s nerdy little brother and knows if his captain finds out, there will be hell to pay.

Nate just wants to be left in peace to study without his brother Harrison’s hockey teammates hanging around and getting on his nerves. Until he sees a familiar tattoo on a gay dating app belonging to the hockey team’s tough guy Jesse. When Harrison asks him to tutor Jesse for a class he is failing, maybe Nate can discover if it really is Jesse on that app?

Jesse is used to being called dumb, but being tutored by his captain’s younger brother in a subject he doesn’t even study is humiliating. Especially when he’s that cute. But when Nate treats him like more than just some dumb jock, Jesse might have bigger problems on his plate.

Book one of the Ivy League Players series. Can be read as a standalone. Every book in the series will follow a new couple at a different fictionalized Ivy League college.

Bleh, dit was het niet. Er zat veel potentieel in het boek, want ik vond het verhaal op zich wel tof, maar het was zo slecht geschreven… Ik kon me er eigenlijk niet goed over zetten Ik zou gestopt zijn met lezen als het dan ook nog eens een stom verhaal was.

Wat me ook enorm stoorde, was dat Harrison Jesse out voor het hele team zonder dat daar op teruggekomen wordt. Totaal niet oké.

Teleurstellend, deze. Ik weet niet waarom ik ‘m heb uitgelezen. Naast dat ik het niet goed geschreven vond, zitten er wat vreemde elementen in:

  • Jamie wordt vaak (heel vaak)(te vaak) door Rylan vergeleken met Rylans overleden broer Nick. Hij zegt dat Jamie op Nick lijkt en dan volgt er een beschrijving van hoe Nick eruitzag en ik vind dat raar. Dat is je overleden broer… Hoezo voel je je aangetrokken tot zijn uiterlijk?
  • Ik begreep niet wat er met Austin aan de hand was.
  • De vader van Rylan zegt tijdens een telefoontje iets erg kwetsends Toevallig is Jamie tijdens dat telefoontje in dezelfde ruimte aanwezig en zegt hij daarna dat Rylans vader niet meende wat hij zei. Maar hoe weet Jamie wat die vader zei? Stond de telefoon op speaker? Heeft Rylan dat verteld Dat lijkt me allebei raar, gezien het karakter van Rylan. Ik weet ook niet goed waarom ik het met dat feit zo lastig heb, haha.
  • Ik weet niet of ik het heb gemist, maar ik zou graag willen weten hoe oud onze personages zijn. Het voelt alsof er een paar dingen niet kloppen op dat vlak.

Dat gezegd zijnde, ben ik misschien gewoon de enige die een probleem heeft met dit boek, want op Goodreads heeft het een gemiddelde score van 4.2⭐.

They’re murmuring again. Trying to keep their voices low so the prisoner can’t hear. But the prisoner is fifteen feet away, and they are failing.

I wish they would take me out of the room if they need to discuss. Bring me back to the small room I was in this morning. But, of course, they let me stand in this cage in the middle of them. On display.

I pick a spot four feet in front of me and maintain my gaze. I don’t want to look at them and I don’t want to fall asleep. I feel a yawn.

“Mr. Malfoy. Your next witness is here. Are you ready to proceed?”

I almost smile. Do I have a choice?

Twee Dramione fanfics! Ze volgen elkaar op en ik was eerst niet helemaal mee met het concept, maar het zit zo: het is hetzelfde verhaal, maar TRTTD is verteld vanuit Hermione haar standpunt en ATWT is verteld vanuit Draco en dan heb je als derde deel in deze reeks ook nog The Auction dat zich afspeelt in een andere realiteit waarin The Dark Lord de oorlog wint.

Bon, zoals eigenlijk met alle fanfics die ik al heb gelezen is dit ook weer heel goed geschreven en heb ik vaak moeten lachen. Dat gezegd zijnde vond ik de verhalen net iets te lang. Ik had eigenlijk ook graag eerst Draco zijn pov gelezen, want dat vind ik altijd interessanter, maar tegen dat ik aan zijn verhaal was, had ik het al een beetje gehad en merkte ik dat ik over sommige stukken héél snel las.

Dus, aanrader? Ja. Allebei? Ja. Maar misschien met een pauzeke tussen.

The Auction had ik blijkbaar ooit al eens gelezen. Ik nam me voor om het nog eens te lezen, maar ik ga nu toch efkes wachten.

Common Goal van Rachel Reid

Het vierde boek uit de Game Changers-reeks van Rachel Reid (je weet wel, van Heated Rivalry en The Long Game 😉 ). Ook dit boek heb ik al eens gelezen en ook nu krijgt het vier sterren. Rachel kan gewoon echt goeie personages neerzetten. Ik vond de dynamiek tussen Kyle en Eric tof. Als ik een puntje van kritiek moet geven, zou ik zeggen dat ze wel wat sneller voor hun gevoelens mogen uitkomen. Ik heb het niet voor die hele miscommunicatie en ik snap niet hoe moeilijk het kan zijn om eerlijk te zijn tegen iemand als je daar regelmatig mee de koffer induikt en relatieachtige dingen mee doet.

Top Secret van Sarina Bowen en Elle Kennedy

Waardering: 4 uit 5.

Dit is ook een reread! Ik las het in 2022 al eens, herinnerde me het plots en had zin om het opnieuw te lezen. Echt een goed boek! Sarina en Elle zijn toppers in het genre, vind ik. Ze zetten altijd goed uitgewerkte personages neer die ook geloofwaardig zijn en een fijne dynamiek hebben (of toch ontwikkelen).

Top hier is dat de personages elkaar in het begin écht niet tof vinden, online dan toch soort van gevoelens krijgen en dan ineens ontdekken wie de andere echt is. Mijn favoriet was Luke!

Morning Glory Milking Farm van C.M. Nascosta

Haha, boy oh boy. Dit boek stond al eeuwen op mijn lijstje uit nieuwsgierigheid, maar ik durfde er eerlijk gezegd nooit goed aan te beginnen, omdat de korte inhoud me afschrikte. Gek genoeg was ik positief verrast door het boek! Vooral door de romance dan – het hele milking farm-gedoe was niet zo mijn ding. Ik vond het leuk geschreven ook en grappig met momenten.

Ik had wat moeite om me voor te stellen hoe onze minotaurus met zijn stierenhoofd onze Violet deftig kan kussen, laat staan hoe zijn 🍆 in haar zou passen, maar kijk, het zou geen smutty romance zijn als het niet allemaal zou lukken hé.

Nog eentje van mijn favoriete schrijversduo! Ik had deze ook al eens gelezen, maar herinnerde me er eigenlijk niets meer van. Leuk verhaal! Ik vond het een origineel concept door Fetch. Matt vond ik een perfecte book boyfriend. Toffe kerel, lief, respectvol, goeie vader. 👌🏻 Hailey vond ik ook wel leuk, maar het stoorde me een beetje hoe ze ineens in een bakvis verandert als ze Matt ziet.

The Dixon Rule van Elle Kennedy

Aah, fake dating, een van mijn favoriete tropes! Ik heb een beetje getwijfeld over de score. Dat lag zeker niet aan de schrijfstijl van Elle Kennedy, want die is zoals we gewend zijn van haar; top! Ik had eerder een probleem met Diana. Ik vond haar in het begin zo gemeen, eigenlijk een beetje een pestkop tegenover Shane en daar had ik het wat lastig mee.

Aan de andere kant, dit boek gaf me een krop in mijn keel op een bepaald moment en ik ben 99% zeker dat als ik dat stuk thuis had gelezen, ik had gehuild. Maar ik zat in de trein, dus ik heb me ingehouden, haha.

Tof dat mijn favo personages uit de Off Campus reeks van Elle af en toe eens terugkomen (zoals Garrett Graham, John Logan, John Tucker en Dean DiLaurentis). Altijd leuk om te zien hoe het nu met hen gaat.

Ik vond dit verrassend; ik had niet meteen een M/F/M-boek verwacht in deze reeks. Het boek was misschien wat te lang. Ik denk dat dat mede ook komt doordat we met drie personages zitten en Elle elk volledig wil uitwerken. Daardoor leek het alsof er wel héél veel gebeurde. Maar ik heb er wel van genoten en vond de dynamiek tussen onze twee jongens (en hun band onderling) en Charlotte geweldig. En de 🌶️ ook 😉

SCU Hockey reeks van J.J. Mulder

Waardering: 3.5 uit 5.

Dit is een reeks van vijf boeken en we volgen hierin telkens een ander hockeyspeler uit het team. Toevallig zijn ze ook allemaal queer. Ik geef de reeks een algemene score van 3,5 sterren. Fijne verhalen en leuk ook dat niet elk personage gay is maar er bijvoorbeeld ook ace of demi koppels bij zitten.

De kwaliteit van het schrijfwerk verbetert er met elk boek op, dus dat was ook tof om te merken. Ik vond het aangenaam dat veel van de personages echt soft zijn (op de best mogelijke manier) en dat ze veel diepte hebben.

Waar ik wel wat een probleem mee had is dat de auteur vaak over (in mijn ogen) belangrijke momenten gaat door gewoon te zeggen “ah ja, en Micky had een gesprek met de coach” zonder dat we echt meegenomen worden in het gesprek zelf, terwijl ik daar net héél nieuwsgierig naar was. We missen bijvoorbeeld ook wat therapiesessies die me interessant leken en een coming out bij een van de personages zijn ouders. Ik snap het ergens ook wel omdat de boeken waarschijnlijk wel heel lang zouden worden anders, maar ik vond het toch een gemiste kans.
